SUMMARY

Cuba’s medical collaboration with Peru goes back to the arrival of the Henry Reeve Medical Brigade, which specializes in disaster and epidemic situations, in the South American nation following earthquakes in 1970 and 2007. Between 2008 and 2012, three medical brigades arrived; these were sent to the southern regions of Pisco and Ica, and were also present in Cutervo province. In addition, a contingent of ophthalmologists was assigned to Cuzco between 2009 and 2012. From 2014 to 2016, 42 Cuban doctors provided advisory services to improve public health policies, health professionals’ development, and transfer of technologies. The Peruvian government paid 5,000 soles per month (1,785 USD) for each doctor, reaching 7,000 soles at one point, for lodging, food, transportation, and benefits — a much higher salary than the minimum, which is just over 900 soles (300 USD). However, the authors have yet to determine the amount that the doctors received. In 2017, following several devastating floods, Cuban medical professionals returned to Peru for two months. In response to the current Covid-19 pandemic, Cuba has offered to send 30 medical professionals to Peru.
